Atlas VPN is a US based VPN provider whose trademark is owned by Peakstar Technologies. Atlas VPN was acquired by Nord Security in 2021, adding to the growing list of VPNs operated by Nord Security (NordVPN, Surfshark, and Atlas VPN). The domain name atlasvpn.com has existed since 2012 and has been sold/transfered numerous times. AtlasVPN was formally launched in 2020.
Atlas VPN operates under a freemium model. Their free service is quite limited, while the “Premium” subscription offers additional features such as ad blocking, data breach monitoring, and more. The app also features a Kill Switch feature which is an important way to protect your privacy in the event your VPN connection drops for any reason.
While the app does not have any blatant adware baked in, it does enable Analytics by default for free plans. I discovered this after looking through network traffic and observing many pings to Google Firebase and AppsFlyer SDK. While there is nothing nefarious about this, it is definitely a conscious choice by the company to include these scripts in their app which some may view as unnecessary.
